How is Svedbro Smide Connected to Gränsfors Bruk?

In 1985, Svedbro Smide’s former owner, Gabriel Brånby, purchased the bankrupt Gränsfors Bruks AB and merged the operations under the name Gränsfors Bruks AB.

Svedbro Smide focused on wrecking bars and forestry tools, while Gränsfors Bruk manufactured axes and other hand tools. In 1988, Gränsfors Bruk sold the forestry tool division to Sandvik, and in 2005, the businesses were separated again. The Gränsfors Bruks Wrecking Bar Forge in Gnarp became Gränsfors Smide in Gnarp AB, while axe manufacturing continued at Gränsfors Bruks Axe Forge.

In recent years, Gabriel’s sons Adam Brånby and Daniel Brånby have taken over the leadership, and in January 2015, the company in Gnarp returned to its original name, Svedbro Smide AB, to distinguish itself from the sister company Gränsfors Bruk AB and reconnect with its history. Despite significant economic challenges, Svedbro Smide has continued to grow and now sells its tools in over thirty countries.

Svedbro Wrecking Bar

What is the ToVe Wrecking Bar?

The ToVe Wrecking Bar is a model developed in 1952 by Svedbro Smidesfabrik on behalf of Gränsfors Bruk. It was named TOVE after the salesman Tore Vestin and was based on a model that Svedbro Smide had been producing since 1942. The collaboration with Gränsfors Bruk did not work well, which led to Svedbro Smide continuing as an independent forge in Gnarp under the leadership of Per Enander.

Today, the same Wrecking Bar model is produced under the name Svedbro Wrecking Bar, still in the characteristic blue color that has been a hallmark since 1952.

Is the Gränsfors Wrecking Bar and Svedbro Wrecking Bar the same?

Yes, the Wrecking Bar we produce today is the same as the one produced since 1952 (based on a model from 1942) that was developed by Svedbro Smide on behalf of Gränsfors Bruk. Initially, it was named the ToVe Wrecking Bar after the salesman Tore Vestin. During the years the companies were merged, it was also called the Gränsfors Wrecking Bar.

Today, it is produced under the name Svedbro Wrecking Bar, still in the characteristic blue color that has been a hallmark since 1952.

One wrecking bar, several wrecking bars?

In Sweden, the word “kofot” can be bent in different ways, such as “kofotar” or “kofötter,” but at Svedbro Smide, we’ve always said “en kofot, flera kofotar.” This tradition goes way back, and one story we’ve heard is that it was the current owner’s father, Gabriel Brånby, who played a role in getting the term “kofotar” included in the Swedish Academy Dictionary (SAOL). Whether that’s true or not, we can’t say for sure, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it is!

The Stalpen

What is the Stalpen and what is it used for?

The Stalpen is a mechanical tree felling guide that can push a tree in the desired direction, even if the tree’s natural fall direction is different, providing a safe tree felling process even with very difficult trees. The Stalpen is designed to withstand large forces such as overhangs, wind gusts, and incorrect tree lean. The mechanics of the Stalpen are highly reliable as it does not use wires, nylon straps, or other variants for operation, all to minimize the risk of tangling and wear on the materials.

How does the safety crank work, and what makes it unique?

The safety crank consists of a lamellar coupling with friction elements and a ratchet gear with a catch that prevents backlash from the crank, allowing it to be turned in both directions without needing to adjust the catch that holds the ratchet gear in place.

What is the lifting capacity of the Stalpen, and how much force is needed to use it?

The design means the lifting capacity is 17 times the force you apply to the crank. The maximum lifting capacity is 2600 kg.

Can the Stalpen replace a winch or other special machines?

No, the Stalpen does not replace a winch or other specialized machines for difficult and risky tasks. Judgment and professional experience are always important during tree felling.
